MATCH OVERVIEW & ANALYSIS
Armada FC travelled to face I.S.S.A FC on Saturday 21 February 2026 at the Chris Nicholl Soccer Centre, Wednesbury Road, Walsall (WS1 4JG). Kick-off at 2:30pm was played in typical late-February conditions – overcast skies, light breeze and a temperature of approximately 8°C. The pitch was firm but playable, and Armada arrived well prepared, structured in their 4-4-2 system, confident after strong training sessions focused on ball retention and midfield control.
1st half began with ISSA kicking off, but it was immediately clear that Armada were intent on dictating tempo. Pardale forced an early save on 5 minutes after good link-up play, while Al-Hussain drew multiple fouls in central areas as Armada established control. Francis delivered from corners on 22 minutes, signalling sustained pressure.
ISSA, however, carried threat on transition. After several half-chances and corners of their own, the breakthrough came on 34 minutes. A swift attack down the right, originating from zone 15, cut inside and finished low beyond the keeper. Against the run of possession, ISSA led. Armada responded through efforts from Francis and Abdul Razak, but precision eluded them.
HALF-TIME: I.S.S.A FC 1–0 ARMADA FC
2nd half followed a similar script. Armada controlled territory, winning fouls and corners, with Pardale again central to attacking build-up. However, on 52 minutes ISSA struck again, capitalising on defensive transition space just outside the area. Despite further corners (six in total across the match) and late pressure including shots saved from Ray Francis and Osa, Armada could not convert their 62% possession into goals. A third ISSA strike in the 90th minute sealed the result.
FULL-TIME: I.S.S.A FC 3–0 ARMADA FC
Statistically, Armada completed 221 passes to ISSA’s 143 and held the ball for 21 minutes compared to 13. They attempted 10 shots from 10 total attempts, winning 21 free kicks and 6 corners. Yet only 40% of shots came from inside the box. ISSA were ruthless, converting 3 goals from 17 attempts.
Compared to recent weeks, there was a marked shift. Armada recorded 24% more possession than the previous fixture and registered five additional shots. However, the scoreline remained unchanged at zero goals scored. The conversion rate mirrored previous matches, highlighting a recurring issue – improved control without end product. It suggests structural progress in midfield dominance, but final-third efficiency remains the decisive missing element.
TACTICAL OVERVIEW
Armada battled hard and demonstrated clear structural growth. The midfield pairing controlled central zones 8 and 11 effectively, and only 28.1% of possession occurred in the defensive third – a significant improvement from earlier defeats. Wing utilisation improved, with over 29% of play progressing through flanks.
However, the tactical balance within the 4-4-2 system remains incomplete. While ball circulation and territorial advancement improved, counter-attacking sharpness and defensive transition awareness lagged. The concession at 34’ and 52’ stemmed from quick ISSA breaks exploiting space around the edge of the area. The learning is evident: control must translate into penetration, and transitions must be managed with greater discipline.
STANDOUT PERFORMANCES
Star Player – Khan
Siraj Khan earns Star Player recognition for his resilience and leadership throughout the 90 minutes. Frequently fouled in central areas and instrumental in ball recovery, Siraj maintained composure under pressure and contributed significantly to Armada’s territorial dominance. His work rate, positioning and willingness to receive under pressure embodied the team’s commitment.
POST-MATCH INTERVIEW
Head Coach Shahid Khan reflected with measured honesty:
“Across the last three league games, we averaged around 41–42% possession. Today we stepped up to 61.8%. That shows clear improvement in executing the ball-retention element of our 4-4-2 plan. Territory was stronger, defensive-third possession reduced, and we progressed play better through the flanks.
The gap now is transition and box threat. Ten shots, only 40% inside the area, and conceding on defensive transitions tells us exactly where to focus. Build-up is improving. Decision-making in the final third and transition defence must now match that standard.”
The tone was reflective rather than reactive. The foundation is stabilising. The next step is ruthlessness.
REFEREE REPORT – Anthony Forrester
The officiating was consistent across both halves. Fouls were awarded fairly, particularly in midfield where Armada won 21 free kicks. There were no major contentious decisions or penalties. The referee maintained control during late stoppage-time phases where emotions could have escalated.
